Revelation place: Mecca
Revelation order: 21
Number of verses: 6
Subjects: Protection · Supplication · Shayṭān · Human Nature · Faith in Allah
Summary: Surah An-Nās is the second of the Muʿawwidhatayn (Chapters of Refuge), alongside Surah Al-Falaq. While Al-Falaq focuses on external harms, this surah addresses internal dangers particularly the whisperings that corrupt the heart.
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind.’” (114:1–3)
In these three verses, Allah is described with three majestic attributes:
1. Lord (Rabb) The One who nurtures, sustains, and protects.
2. Sovereign (Malik) The ultimate King with full authority.
3. God (Ilāh) The only One worthy of worship.
This layered description teaches believers that Allah alone has the power to protect them from every kind of evil especially those that attack the heart and mind.
“From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws who whispers in the breasts of mankind among jinn and among mankind.” (114:4–6)
This identifies the real threat:
· The Whisperer (waswās) Shayṭān, who plants doubts, fear, and evil thoughts in the heart.
· He “withdraws” when the believer remembers Allah, showing the power of dhikr (remembrance).
· These whispers can come from both jinn and humans, through direct or subtle influence.
Key Embedded Themes:
· Inner Protection: The heart is the battlefield; refuge is with Allah.
· Three Attributes of Allah: Lordship, Sovereignty, and Divinity comprehensive protection.
· Reality of Whispering: Shayṭān works through doubt, fear, and distraction.
· Power of Remembrance: Dhikr and seeking Allah’s refuge drives evil away.
· Awareness of Influences: Both jinn and humans can whisper and mislead.
Virtues of An-Nās:
· The Prophet used Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nās every night for protection.
· They are called “al-Muʿawwidhatayn” (the two protectors).
· Reciting them brings divine safeguarding from evil whispers, envy, and harm.
Essence:
An-Nās is a surah of inner defense and spiritual clarity. It reminds believers that the greatest threat often comes not from outside, but from within the whispers that lead astray. Refuge in Allah as Lord, King, and God fortifies the heart against these influences.
I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.
With the name of Allah, the gracious the merciful.
(Acknowledge and declare that Allah is the author of the Quran)
1- Say” I seek refuge with The God of the people” (The Educator and Guardian)
2- The king of the people” (Sovereign, manager of their affairs)
3- The Deity of the people (Only God)
4- From the evil of the retreating (alternating) slinking whisperer (The devilish Jinn Satan (Iblees), who constantly alternates his deceptive tactics, and retreats when the person is armed with faith, and remembers Allah)
5- Who whisper in the chest (heart, self-whispering) of the people (All kinds of obsessions and delusions to distract them from the straight path of guidance and righteousness)
6- From among the Jinn and the people (Also the harm of the slinking devilish, who could be of mankind, persistent oneself, and the devilish Jinn-kind)
(Truth from Allah the mighty)
END
