Revelation place: Mecca
Revelation order: 30
Number of verses: 11
Theme: The overwhelming Day of Judgment, the weighing of deeds, and the eternal fate of souls.
Subjects: Resurrection · Judgment Day · Accountability · Heaven & Hell · Warning
Summary:Surah Al-Qāri‘ah is a short, powerful surah that shakes the heart with its opening:
“The Striking Calamity what is the Striking Calamity? And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?” (101:1–3)
The repetition of Al-Qāri‘ah (literally “the Knocker” or “the Striker”) reflects the terror and suddenness of the Day of Judgment. This event will knock and strike the hearts of humanity, leaving no one unaware.
“It is the Day when people will be like scattered moths, and the mountains will be like fluffed wool.” (101:4–5)
People like scattered moths: disoriented, weak, fluttering in chaos.
Mountains like fluffed wool: solid structures will crumble to nothing, reflecting the absolute collapse of worldly power and order.
The surah then moves to the central moment of judgment:
“Then as for he whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], he will be in a pleasant life. But as for he whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss.” (101:6–9)
Heavy scales = a life of righteousness and sincerity → Paradise.
Light scales = neglect or denial of faith and good deeds → Hell.
This weighing is precise, just, and unavoidable.
“And what can make you know what that is? It is a Fire, intensely hot.” (101:10–11)
The surah closes by emphasizing the severity of Hellfire, leaving no room for doubt or complacency.
Key Embedded Themes:
The Striking Event: The Day of Judgment is sudden, overwhelming, and unavoidable.
Cosmic Collapse: Humanity will be powerless, and creation will lose its stability.
Weighing of Deeds: Every soul will face a fair and exact judgment.
Heaven and Hell: Clear, contrasting destinies await.
Moral Urgency: A wake-up call to live with purpose and preparation.
Essence:Al-Qāri‘ah is a surah of shock, clarity, and final judgment. It strips away illusions of power and permanence, reminding humanity that only righteous deeds endure. It urges believers to live consciously, knowing that on that day, every weight on the scale matters.
I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.
With the name of Allah, The Gracious The Merciful.
