Updated: Oct 15

Revelation place: Mecca

Revelation order: 22

Number of verses: 4

Theme: Absolute Oneness of Allah (Tawḥīd), His uniqueness, and His self-sufficiency.Subjects: Tawḥīd · Theology · Divine Attributes · Creed · Foundation of Faith

Summary:Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ is one of the most important chapters in the Qur’an, encapsulating the core of Islamic belief in one short passage.

“Say, He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.” (112:1–4)

This surah was revealed in response to polytheists and Jews in Makkah who asked the Prophet Muhammad:

“Describe to us your God.”

Allah answered with a pure declaration of His Oneness unmatched, uncreated, and eternal.

1. “Say, He is Allah, One” (Qul huwa Allāhu Aḥad)

  • Aḥad signifies absolute unity and uniqueness.

  • Allah is not one of many; He is One without partner, rival, or likeness.

  • This verse negates polytheism, trinity, and idolatry.

2. “Allah, the Eternal Refuge” (Allāhu ṣ-Ṣamad)

  • Ṣamad means the One to whom all creation turns for need, but who is in need of nothing.

  • It affirms Allah’s complete self-sufficiency and perfection.

3. “He neither begets nor is born” (Lam yalid wa lam yūlad)

  • Allah is not a father, son, or offspring.

  • He is eternal without beginning or end, unlike created beings.

  • This refutes any human-like attributes ascribed to Him.

4. “Nor is there to Him any equivalent” (Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad)

  • Nothing and no one is comparable to Allah in essence, power, or attributes.

  • This closes the door to all forms of shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Key Embedded Themes:

  • Absolute Monotheism: Allah is One, unique, and without partner.

  • Self-Sufficiency: All creation depends on Him, but He depends on none.

  • Eternality: No beginning, no end, no lineage.

  • Incomparability: Allah is beyond human imagination or likeness.

  • Foundational Creed: This surah summarizes the essence of Islamic belief.

Virtues of Al-Ikhlāṣ:

  • The Prophet said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to one-third of the Qur’an.” (Bukhārī)

  • Reciting it frequently is a sign of love for Allah, and it brings immense reward.

  • It is often recited in daily prayers for its deep meaning and concise beauty.

Essence:Al-Ikhlāṣ is the heart of Tawḥīd a pure declaration of Allah’s absolute Oneness, perfection, and uniqueness. It is a refutation of all false concepts of God and a foundation of faith for every Muslim.

It teaches that Allah alone is worthy of worship, and nothing is comparable to Him in power, essence, or existence.

Notes:

Surah Al-Ikhlas is a profound interpretation that emphasizes the absolute oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and the perfection of His attributes, urging sincerity in His worship and the abandonment of polytheism in all its forms.

Surah Al-Ikhlas contrasts this pure monotheism with the polytheistic, anthropomorphic, and mythological beliefs prevalent at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), highlighting how the Quran corrected these misconceptions through a simple yet powerful declaration of divine unity.

At the time Prophet Muhamed (pbuh) began preaching, most religious communities had diverged from true monotheism and held flawed beliefs about God, worshipping multiple deities with human-like traits and relationships. In response, Surah Al-Ikhlas was revealed as a concise and profound declaration of Tawhid, rejecting all forms of polytheism and anthropomorphism. It affirms that Allah is One, eternal, self-sufficient, and beyond human likeness. The Prophet held this Surah in high regard, often citing its value as equivalent to one-third of the Quran due to its encapsulation of the doctrine (Tawhid) belief in the Oneness of Allah, one of the six core pillars of Islamic belief, alongside the belief in the Prophethood, the Angels, the Divine books, the Divine decree and Judgement day.

I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.

With the name of Allah, the gracious the merciful.

(Acknowledge and declare that Allah is the author of the Quran)

1- Say” He Allah, is One” (The Absolute Oneness (Tawhid), One unit, not divisible, unbreakable, not combined, with no partner in His essence, attributes, or actions. He is the One and Only, unique in His existence, the perfect, and nothing is similar to Him)

2- Allah The intended (The absolute eternal refuge to whom all creatures turn to Him in their needs, and He is the One who does not need anything)

3- He did not beget, and was not begotten (Allah has neither a son nor a companion, nor He was born. He is the first and the last, who has no beginning or end)

4- And was never for Him, an equivalent (He has no equal, nor similar in His essence, attributes, or actions. He is the One and Only, without equal, and there is nothing the like Him like)
