Summary:
Surah An-Naba’ is a Meccan surah that opens with a powerful question about “An-Naba’ al-‘Aẓīm” “The Great News.”
“About what are they asking one another? About the great news that over which they disagree.” (78:1–3)
This “great news” refers to the Day of Resurrection, which the disbelievers mocked and denied. The surah asserts with full certainty:
“No! They are going to know. Then, no! They are going to know.” (78:4–5)
The surah then points to signs in creation as proof of divine power and the reality of the afterlife:
The earth spread out,
The mountains as pegs,
Humans created in pairs,
Sleep for rest, night for covering, day for livelihood,
Rain descending, producing gardens and food.
“Have We not made the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes?” (78:6–7)
These signs serve as evidence that the One who created and sustains life can resurrect it.
The surah then transitions to scenes of the Day of Judgment:
The Trumpet is blown,
The heavens are opened,
The mountains vanish,
Hell is brought forth, awaiting the wrongdoers.
“Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait for the transgressors, a place of return.” (78:21–22)
The righteous, however, are promised a different destiny:
“Indeed, for the righteous is attainment of gardens and grapevines, and full-breasted companions of equal age, and a full cup.” (78:31–34)
They will find peace, reward, and the pleasure of their Lord.
The surah ends with a final warning: the Day will come, no intercession will help except by Allah’s permission, and the deniers will wish for annihilation rather than face their fate.
“The Day they see it, it will be as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.” (78:40)
Key Embedded Themes:
The Great News: Resurrection and judgment are inevitable.
Signs of Creation: Evidence of divine power and wisdom.
The Day of Judgment: Cosmic upheaval and divine justice.
Two Destinies: Eternal bliss for the righteous, punishment for deniers.
Divine Warning: The time for repentance is now, not then.
Essence:An-Naba’ is a surah of powerful imagery and certainty. It shakes the denier with reminders of the Hereafter and reassures the believer of Allah’s perfect justice, mercy, and reward.
With the name of Allah, the Gracious the Merciful.
