Revelation place: Medina
Revelation order: 100
Number of verses: 8
Theme: The arrival of clear evidence through the Prophet, the division between believers and rejecters, and the path to salvation.
Subjects: Revelation · Prophethood · People of the Book · Accountability · Reward & Punishment
Summary:Surah Al-Bayyinah, revealed in Medina, addresses both the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) and the polytheists. It clarifies that they would not have remained divided if they had accepted the “clear proof”:
“Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them the clear proof a Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures.”(98:1–2)
The “clear proof” refers to Prophet Muhammad and the Qur’an a pure, preserved revelation bringing guidance and truth.
This shows that true clarity comes through divine revelation, not human speculation or inherited tradition.
The surah then describes the essence of true religion:
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.” (98:5)
Here, Allah summarizes the core of faith:
Pure worship of Allah alone.
Sincerity of heart.
Establishing prayer.
Giving zakah (purification of wealth).
This message is the same call given to all prophets throughout history.
Then comes the division of outcomes:
“Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.” (98:6)
“Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds those are the best of creatures. Their reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.” (98:7–8)
Those who reject truth despite receiving it are described as the worst of creation, while the believers who accept and act upon it are described as the best of creation.
Their reward is eternal gardens and mutual contentment between Allah and His servants.
Key Embedded Themes:
The Clear Proof: Revelation through the Prophet is divine, pure, and decisive.
Unity of Message: All prophets called to sincere worship of one God.
Accountability of People of the Book: Revelation was meant to clarify, not divide.
Eternal Outcomes: Hell for rejecters of truth; Paradise for the sincere believers.
Allah’s Pleasure: The ultimate reward is Allah’s contentment with His servants.
Essence:Al-Bayyinah is a surah of clarity, accountability, and finality. It declares the coming of the Prophet as the ultimate proof and guidance. It reminds humanity that true religion is simple and universal: worship Allah sincerely, establish prayer, and give charity. Those who embrace it rise to the best of creation, while those who reject it knowingly face the consequence of denial.
I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.
With the name of Allah, The Gracious The Merciful.
(Acknowledge and declare that Allah is the author of the Quran)
1- Was not those who disbelieved from among the people of the book and the polytheist (Who takes partner with Allah), disconnecting (abandoning their misguided believes), until there come to them the clear proof (The need to send, the awaited prophet mentioned in their books)
2- A messenger from Allah that recites purified scripture
3- In it valuable writing (valuable, sound, and noble morals, and contain no errors and contradiction)
4- And did not divide the people who were brought to the book, until after had come to them the clear proof (Some of them denied Muhammed (pbuh) and some of them believed in him. However, before he was sent, they were not divided concerning his description as the promised awaited messenger in their books)
5- And they were not commanded but to worship Allah, being sincere to His religion, inclining (inclining away from other believes and centered only towards Allah’s straight path,), and to establish prayer (Constant Connection to Allah) and to bring Zakat (Charity, Purify oneself, Smartly sharing to grow God’s giving favors to you by giving forward for this world and the hereafter), and that is the religion of straightness (The religion that is straight, firm, clear and has no crookedness in it)
6- Indeed, those who disbelieved from among the people of the book and the polytheist, in the fire of Gahanna, abiding in it, they are the worst creation (That is created from dust)
7- Indeed, those who believed and did righteousness, they are the best of creation
8- Their rewards at their God, gardens of residence, beneath which rivers flow, abiding in in fore, Allah pleased about them (For their obedience and for their deeds), and they pleased with Him (For His rewards) and that is for that who was pious to his God
