Revelation place: Medina
Revelation order: 93
Number of verses: 8
Theme: The great earthquake of the Day of Judgment, human accountability, and the exposure of all deeds.
Subjects: Resurrection · Judgment Day · Accountability · Deeds · Divine Justice
Summary:Surah Az-Zalzalah delivers a vivid and powerful image of the Day of Judgment, focusing on the final earthquake that will shake the entire world:
“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake, and the earth discharges its burdens.” (99:1–2)
The “earthquake” refers to the cataclysmic shaking that will occur at the end of time.
“Discharges its burdens” the earth will bring forth everything hidden: the dead for resurrection, hidden deeds, and secrets long buried.
“And man says, ‘What is [wrong] with it?’ That Day, it will report its news because your Lord has commanded it.” (99:3–5)
On that day, the earth itself will speak and bear witness to what occurred upon it every deed done in public or secret. This reflects the total transparency and accountability before Allah.
“That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds. So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”(99:6–8)
This is one of the most concise and comprehensive statements of divine justice in the Qur’an:
Every action counts, no matter how small.
No good deed will be lost, and no sin will be overlooked.
Each soul will stand alone to face its own record.
Key Embedded Themes:
The Final Earthquake: A cosmic event marking the beginning of Judgment.
The Earth as Witness: Nothing remains hidden; creation itself testifies.
Individual Accountability: Everyone faces their deeds, big or small.
Perfect Justice: Divine judgment is exact, fair, and comprehensive.
Moral Awareness: Encourages mindfulness in every action.
Essence:Az-Zalzalah is a surah of powerful accountability and certainty. It shakes the human heart with the reality that even the smallest deeds will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment. It urges believers to live with consciousness, integrity, and sincerity, knowing that nothing is ever lost before Allah.
I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.
With the name of Allah, The Gracious The Merciful.
