Subjects: Prophethood · Consolation · Gratitude · Hope · Mercy

Summary:

Surah Ad-Duḥā is a Meccan surah revealed during a period of sadness in the Prophet Muhammad’s life. For some time, revelation had paused, and his enemies mocked him, saying his God had abandoned him.

Allah responded with one of the most tender and comforting chapters in the Qur’an.

“By the morning brightness, and [by] the night when it covers with darkness  your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He detested [you].” (93:1–3)

The duḥā  the morning light symbolizes renewal, warmth, and hope, while the night symbolizes the trials and silence. Allah swears by both to show that neither hardship nor ease means abandonment.

“And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life]. And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.” (93:4–5)

This is a direct promise to the Prophet: the future is brighter than the past, and Allah will honor him beyond measure both in this life and the Hereafter.

Then Allah reminds the Prophet of His past favors to nurture his heart:

“Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge? And He found you lost and guided [you]. And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient.” (93:6–8)

These reminders teach that Allah’s care is constant, even in hardship.

From this comfort flows a moral instruction  to share mercy with others:

“So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him]. But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].” (93:9–11)

Having experienced Allah’s mercy, the Prophet  and by extension all believers are called to extend mercy to those in need: the orphan, the seeker, the vulnerable.

Key Embedded Themes:

  • Divine Reassurance: Allah never abandons His servants, especially His prophets.

  • Hope After Hardship: Dawn follows night; relief follows trial.

  • Reminder of Blessings: Reflecting on past mercy strengthens faith.

  • Compassion: Extend to others what Allah has given to you.

  • Promise of Satisfaction: Allah will give abundantly to the faithful.

Essence:Ad-Duḥā is a surah of comfort, mercy, and optimism. It gently reminds the Prophet (and all believers) that Allah’s care never ceases, even in silence. Trials are temporary, but divine love and reward are everlasting. It teaches believers to remember their blessings and extend kindness to others.

Allah Knows Best

Occasion:

During a brief interruption of the Quranic revelations, accompanied by a brief sickness, that prevented Prophet Mohamed PBUH from staying up at night to recite the revelations, the Prophet became anxious, a pagan woman came mocking him and she said: O Mohamed, I do not see your devil but has left you.

I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the condemned.

With the name of Allah the gracious the merciful.

(Acknowledge and declare that Allah is the author of Quran)

1- By the forenoon brightness.

(Allah points to these revelations, as the forenoon of a new day that shines bright on the beginning of new times of belief)

(Allah knows best)

2- And the night when it settled.

(Allah points to these revelations, as the night that covers the gone days of the disbelievers)

(Allah knows best)

3- Never God has left you (Oh Mohamed never left him any time of the Day or Night),

nor discarded you. (Discard him and the revelations out of the discontent of you, as the disbelievers claim)

4- And the latest (Your present life as Allah’s messenger and also the Hereafter)

is better for you than the former. (Your life Before the revelations, and this worldly life)

5- And your God shall grant you,

so you shall be content. (In this life and the hereafter)

6- Did not He find you an orphan so sheltered?

7- And found you wandering (Wandering, about your people beliefs)

so guided. (To Allah’s path)

8- And found you dependent (in need spiritually and financially)

so enrich you.

9- So the orphans do not oppress.

10- So the asker (in need, financially, spiritually, guidance)

do not repulse.

11- And as of God’s boon (Prophesy, Quran, blessings)

speak out (declare, express)

(Truth from Allah the mighty)
